Laytons is a great firm in which to complete your training contract. In our London office, which is typical of the firm, there are usually two trainees taken on each September. Each trainee spends four six-month periods in different departments. Usually Commercial Property, Dispute Resolution and Corporate Commercial and then either Employment or Insolvency.
When trainees start their training contracts at Laytons, they are assigned a training supervisor, one of the partners of the firm. That partner is ultimately responsible for your training and they will be a training supervisor for only one trainee at a time. Your training supervisor is someone you can approach with any problems, whether they are in respect of training or not. There is also a partner in each department who is responsible for your training for the period that you spend in that department.
Towards the end of each six month seat, you will be given a formal review of your progress. You are given positive feedback on your development and told in which areas you need to improve. You are also encouraged to comment on how you have found the experience and what aspects of the training you feel could be improved on. You are also given daily feedback in respect of work completed and your progress in general. In addition to end of seat reviews by the relevant partner in that department, you will have regular meetings with the training supervisors to ensure that you are satisfied with your progress.
