Marc Selby featured in The Telegraph on 'Taxman cracks down on ‘granny annexe’ property loophole'

Tax Partner, Marc Selby has been featured in Telegraph Money in an article highlighting home buyers using a “granny annexe loophole” to cut their stamp duty bill have faced a crackdown from the taxman amid a rise in false claims.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has clawed back millions of pounds from buyers making “granny annexe” tax relief claims. The amount recovered has increased by almost 400pc in the last three years, according to a Freedom of Information request by accountancy firm RSM.

Marc Selby, a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation and chair of the Institute’s Property Taxer Committee, said: “We are contacted by people saying they have received three or four letters from different reclaim agents and they want to ask for our opinion whether or not a claim would be legitimate. Sometimes they are a complete non-starter. These agents are often just firing off letters on the off chance.”
